The project shall construct a 12 ft. wide reinforced concrete shared use trail for approximately 6,550 linear feet that can support safer mobility options for both pedestrians and cyclists. City planners have included the old East Waco MKT route since the 1980s in long-term studies of how the city’s trail system could be expanded from the river corridor to the rest of Waco.  In the Spring 2016, City officials purchased rights to 46 acres (3 linear miles of property) from the Union Pacific Railroad for $600,000.
