Waco Walks

Waco Walks is a casual, constant gathering of Wacoans encouraged to get out and active in their community. This group explores various parts of the community during all times of the year. While some enjoy just moving and enjoying scenery, there are also educational walks that present the local history or surrounding science. All Wacoans are welcome to relish in a more walkable community.

Serenity, Memory, and Activity:

Walking Alongside the Women of Waco

Dec 6 | 9:30 AM | Oakwood Cemetery

2124 S 5th St, Waco

DESCRIPTION:Located just off of La Salle Avenue, Oakwood Cemetery has served as a place of serenity and memory since 1878.  Join Waco Walks December 6th for a walk around the beautiful cemetery grounds with a focus on learning about Waco women whose lives were full of activity before coming to Oakwood for their eternal rest. Our tour guides will be students from a Baylor English class on women writers called “Embodied Natures.” Our path will highlight 10 notable women of Waco who are buried at Oakwood.  Meet up at 9:30, December 6 at Oakwood Cemetery, 2124 S. 5th Street. For more information google “Waco Walks” or find us on Facebook.

DATE: Saturday, December 6th

TIME: 9:30 AM

MEET UP LOCATION: Oakwood Cemetery, 2124 S. 5th Street, Waco

WALK LENGTH: 1 - 1.25 miles

ORGANIZERS: Women Writers Move with Waco

GOT QUESTIONS?: Please contact Ashley Thornton by email at [email protected]

ACCESSIBILITY: Oakwood has a variety of terrain from paved roads to uneven grass patches.  Oakwood’s lots are on raised grass lawns with curbs separating them from the dividing streets.

HYDRATION: Please bring your own water.  Drinking fountains are not available within the cemetery.

DOGS: Dogs welcome, but they MUST be on a leash, and you MUST scoop the poop!

WEATHER/CANCELLATION PLAN: We plan to walk rain or shine, so if it looks like rain, bring an umbrella. Due to the high amount of grass along the route, if it has rained previously, we recommend wearing shoes to account for this.  In the event that there is a terrible storm or something happens and we have to cancel, we will send out a note to the email list.
